“Because You are my Helper, I sing for joy in the shadow of Your wings. I cling to You; Your strong right hand holds me securely.”-Psalm 63:7-8
The Bible describes God as having many amazing qualities. For example, God is loving and faithful (Psalm 108:4). God is powerful and strong (Psalm 65:6). He is kind, good, and merciful (Psalm 116:5). We could go on and on reflecting on the perfections of God and His ways! For now, let’s just reflect on one more way God is described in the Word: God is helpful. Not only is God helpful, He wants to help each of us. Wow, could this really be true?! God, who is omnipotent, sovereign, The Almighty, The Ruler of the universe, is also helpful? Indeed He is, and He chooses to help us! This truth truly is astounding.
In God’s great goodness, He is the utmost help. May we not forget this! He will help us, if we will look to Him for help. In Psalm 121:1-2 we read, “I look up to the mountains—does my help come from there? My help comes from the Lord, who made heaven and earth!” The Psalmist discovered the help above all other help! It comes directly from the Lord. May we ponder this truth and let it marinate in our minds so we don’t take it lightly. God, The King of kings and Lord of lords, The Maker of the mountains, The Creator of the sun and stars, The Sustainer of all things is ready and willing to help us. To deeply take in this reality is to have our minds blown! It’s the truth nonetheless.
So, let me ask you, is He your help? Is He your go-to when you need assistance? Do you cry out to Him first for guidance? When you call out, do you actually listen to His answer? Are you actively seeking His wisdom each day? All of these questions should be considered personally by each of us. Sadly, far too often we look to anything and anyone else first for help. No doubt other people and things can be helpful, but only God can be described as THE HELPER. Only He knows all things! King David learned firsthand where the best help comes from. That’s why he prayed, “Because You are my Helper, I sing for joy in the shadow of Your wings. I cling to You; Your strong right hand holds me securely.” David came to know his dependent state and who to turn to first. So may we.
Because of God’s great kindness, mercy, and love, He wants to help us daily. He knows we can do nothing apart from Him (John 15:4-5). He will help us in our relationships if we ask and listen. He will help us with our jobs, school, insecurities, hurts, confusion, struggles…there is nothing He can’t help with. He is God! Psalm 46:1 puts it this way: “God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.” May we remember where our ultimate help comes from! Might we humbly ask for His help, listen for His help through His Word, prayer, and godly counsel. Then, let’s embrace the help He graciously gives.
Cheer up, friends!
