“Commit everything you do to the Lord. Trust Him, and He will help you.”-Psalm 37:5

As we roll into a brand new year, we have a great opportunity to look back for a moment and give thanks to God. He was there through it all. He was present when times were difficult and when all seemed like “smooth-sailing.” God was over it all, ruling from His throne. I’m reminded of Psalm 103:19 which says, “The Lord has made the heavens His throne; from there He rules over everything.” It’s healthy to look back and thank Him for His sovereign goodness!

It is also really wise to look ahead with hope and intentionality. God continues to reign. He has allowed us to take another breath, and if we’re reading (or listening to) this, our hearts are still beating. Therefore, He still has us here on purpose! Thus, we have purpose, a mission. So what should we give ourselves to? What is an admirable aim as we move ahead?

There are many worthy causes and goals we could give ourselves to. It’s excellent for each one of us to prayerfully seek out some plans and intentions we will commit to. With that said, here is a command from God’s Word that is super helpful as we consider how to spend our lives in the new year. Let's reread Psalm 37:5: "Commit everything you do to the Lord. Trust Him, and He will help you.” This is a top-notch word from God! In this one verse, we see three simple, yet potent instructions that are applicable for all of us. Here they are:

  1. We are to do everything as unto the Lord. This means purposefully giving our thoughts, words, and actions to God in all we do, wherever we are.

  2. We are to fully trust God through it all. He alone is the Lord! He is always faithful. He is ever dependable.

  3. We are to count on Him to help us. As we give our all to Him and trust Him, we can then bank on His assistance.

May this flat-out practical instruction from God guide each of us. What a way to walk into a new year!

Lord, in response to who You are, we choose to give our all to You. We put our trust in You. Thank You for being our Help. In Jesus' name, amen.

Cheer up, friends!
