“I know, Lord, that our lives are not our own. We are not able to plan our own course.”-Jeremiah 10:23
Have you ever been to see the Grand Canyon with your own eyes? Several years ago my family and I took a vacation there. What a sight to behold! I still recall our family piling out of the car and walking up to the edge of the canyon, gazing down hundreds of feet. As we walked along the trail next to the edge, stopping periodically to look out and see the vastness of it all, I was certainly reminded in that moment just how small I really am. The truth is, it is very healthy to acknowledge just how small we are. Even more importantly, how key that we appreciate how BIG God is.
In the Old Testament, we read of God speaking to Jeremiah, calling him to the task of being a prophet to the nations and telling him about Israel’s unfaithfulness and disobedience. As God spoke, Jeremiah was overcome with a sense of God's greatness. Jeremiah was struck by God’s power and wisdom. As he took in the reality of God's might and coming judgement, Jeremiah prayed, “I know, Lord, that our lives are not our own. We are not able to plan our own course. So correct me, Lord, but please be gentle. Do not correct me in anger, for I would die” (Jeremiah 10:23-24). As Jeremiah recognized how truly awesome God is and that God saw what Jeremiah could not fully see on his own, he humbly asked God to direct and correct him. What a wonderful lesson for us!
Today is a good day to acknowledge, to recollect that God alone is God. He made the Grand Canyon, all the earth for that matter, and the heavens with His hands (Psalm 102:25)! God alone is much greater than we can fully fathom. He knows far more than we know. He alone is the Lord! Thus, might we follow Jeremiah’s example, meekly accepting that we can’t plan out our lives well on our own.We need Him! May we echo Jeremiah's brave, submissive prayer to God, asking Him to guide us. Furthermore, let’s ask Him to discipline us. He knows what's best. Today is a super day to humble ourselves before the King of kings and follow His lead. Lord, have your way with us!
Godspeed, friends!
