“Instead, be kind to each other, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, just as God through Christ has forgiven you.”-Ephesians 4:32

The Scottish evangelist, Henry Drummond once posed this question: “Have you ever noticed how much of Christ’s life was spent in doing kind things?” Mr. Drummond asked a good, thoughtful question to reflect upon regarding the kindness of Jesus. Oxford Languages defines kindness as, "the quality of being friendly, generous, and considerate." Kindness is about being helpful, gentle, and caring of others. Most assuredly, Jesus embodies kindness! Scripture makes it clear that Christ also displays other wonderful virtues such as love, holiness, righteousness, joy, courage, patience…etc. But, back to the question Henry Drummond asked, “Have you ever noticed how much of Christ’s life was spent in doing kind things?” When we read through Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John, it’s super evident that Jesus did many, many kind things. He healed the sick. He fed the hungry. He listened to the beggar, served at a wedding celebration by turning water into wine, casted out demons that tormented souls, and taught The Truth that sets people free. All out of kindness. His sacrifice on the cross on our behalf was the kindest act ever performed!

No doubt this truth about Jesus inspired Paul (along with the filling of the Holy Spirit) to write in Ephesians 4:31-32, “Get rid of all bitterness, rage, anger, harsh words, and slander, as well as all types of evil behavior. Instead, be kind to each other…” When we lay down our sinful tendency toward bitterness, rage, anger, and harsh words, and instead, through the strength that Christ gives, we choose to be kind to each other, we are imitating Jesus. Additionally, being kind to each other honors God! Speaking again about kindness, Henry Drummond said, “The greatest thing a man can do for his Heavenly Father is to be kind to some of His other children.”

The Lord is so very kind to us. He forgives with kindness. He is patient because of His kindness. Romans 2:4 powerfully says, “Don’t you see how kind, tolerant, and patient God is with you? Does this mean nothing to you? Can’t you see that his kindness is intended to turn you from your sin?” As we ponder His astounding kindness, may it then propel us to follow His lead and graciously offer kindness to others. Oh how much our families, friends, classmates, and coworkers need it. Let’s be kind with our words and with our actions, all for the glory of God and the good of others!

Cheer up, friends!
