"And again David asked the Lord what to do.”-2 Samuel 5:23
When you are on a road trip and you become unsure of how to get to the desired location, what do you do? Likely what most of us will do first is get on our phone and look up the address on our GPS. Or, we might stop somewhere and ask someone if they know where to go. The bottom line is, wisdom in that kind of situation is getting help from another who knows where to go. It’s foolishness for us to try to figure it out on our own.
In life, we will often need help with direction, with guidance. Many times we will end up asking questions such as: What kind of job is the right one for me? How do I handle this particular situation? What should I do in this relational problem I’m facing? How do I raise my kids the right way? Why does this matter? Where should I go next? What is the right thing to do? For each of us, these questions and a multitude of others will arise. Questions came to the forefront for David several times. In the book of 2 Samuel, we read of David needing guidance. What did he do? David turned to God for help! 2 Samuel 2:1 says, “After this, David asked the Lord, 'Should I move back to one of the towns of Judah?’” God answered, and then David followed what God instructed him to do. We know that David asked the Lord for advice once again in 2 Samuel 5:19. Again, God responded and answered David. Wisely, David followed God’s directions. Finally, 2 Samuel 5:23 says, “And again David asked the Lord what to do.” You guessed it, God answered David yet again. Fortunately, David obeyed God’s guidance repeatedly.
What a grand lesson for us to learn from this story! We should always ask the Lord for direction, for help, for wisdom in all things. Afterall, He knows all things! He made us. God knows more than a thing or two! The Psalmist discerningly put it: “You made me; You created me. Now give me the sense to follow Your commands” (Psalm 119:73). Might we ever humbly seek God’s help in all things through prayer and through His instructions from His Word. Then, when He answers us, may we follow wholeheartedly!
Godspeed, friends!
