“The commandments of the Lord are right, bringing joy to the heart. The commandments of the Lord are clear, giving insight for living.” - Psalm 19:8

If someone ever tells you that following God is lame or boring, don’t believe it! If you’re ever tempted to think that following God’s commands is life-sucking, think again! God is The Creator of joy! He is The Author of true gladness! And He wants us to know where to find the real happiness we all long for.

In Psalm 19:8, we read, “The commandments of the Lord are right, bringing joy to the heart.” Contrary to what Satan wants us to think, God’s commands are spot on, and they lead us to true, satisfying joy! Psalm 119:1 puts it like this, “Joyful are people of integrity, who follow the instructions of the Lord.” The truth is that authentic happiness is actually found in God and following His ways. No wonder Jesus said, in John 15:11, “I have told you these things so that you will be filled with my joy. Yes, your joy will overflow!”

Not only are God’s commands right, leading to joy, but Psalm 19 continues saying, “The commandments of the Lord are clear, giving insight for living." God’s commands are pure and radiant. His commandments give us insight we wouldn’t have otherwise. His ways direct us to bring glory to God and guide us with wisdom for daily life. The Bible, most importantly, leads us to Jesus, who alone can save us, show us the way, and give us life (John 14:6). But, let’s not miss or forget that God’s Word also gives us flat-out practical instruction that is helpful with relationships, love, anger, discipline, work, marriage, parenting, choices, and on and on and on.

With this in mind, may we be encouraged to daily stay in the Bible. It’s amazing how God’s Word, which is living and active (Hebrews 4:12), can help us with everyday living if we will steadily be in His Word with a humble, teachable heart. God wants us to know His commands. Why? Because He knows best! Because He wants us to have His joy, and He wants to help us walk with continued wisdom until the day Christ returns or brings us home. Let’s listen and follow. Joy and insight are at hand!

Godspeed, friends!
